Maureen Baird is a member of the firm’s litigation team. Her practice focus is administrative and constitutional law. Maureen has appeared as counsel at every level of court in Canada including the Supreme Court of Canada. She appears as counsel before a wide variety of administrative tribunals, commissions and boards. Maureen likes to bring a practical and common sense approach to solving legal problems.

Maureen is recognized for her expertise in advising professional regulatory bodies on governance, inquiry, credentials, legislative and bylaw amendment as well as privacy issues. She also represents professionals seeking admission or registration in regulated bodies and defends those in the inquiry process. She has represented lawyers, engineers, investment professionals, architects, social workers, notaries and health professionals before regulatory tribunals in in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal on judicial review and appeal. She has frequently been asked to train inquiry panel members on the conduct of hearings.

Representative Work Highlights

Maureen shares her wealth of knowledge and experience in the area of professional regulation by speaking at Continuing Education programmes. She co-authored a chapter of the Administrative Law Manual. She has been the Chair of the Administrative Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association both nationally and provincially. She was vice-Chair of the National Privacy and Access section of the Canadian Bar Association. Maureen was a member of the Law Society Task Force on Information and Privacy. Recently she spoke in Vienna to a group of international lawyers on issues relating to securing client confidential information when travelling cross border with electronic devices. She is a member of the International Bar Association and Invernomos.

Maureen has more recently become an adjudicator in her own right as a member of arbitration panels of the Federal Pipeline Arbitration Secretariat and as a member of the Discipline Committee of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. She also sits as the Chair on Mental Health Review Board Hearings. Maureen was a director of Access Justice and is past General Counsel to the Canadian Red Cross (BC and Yukon Division).

In 2011, Maureen was honoured to be appointed Queen’s Counsel by the Attorney General of British Columbia in recognition of her professional excellence and service to the community.
