Kelsey Greene – Gaining Practical Experience Through a Legal Internship

Doing an internship during law school is highly recommended for students looking to gain practical experience before entering the workforce. It provides an invaluable opportunity to learn from experienced attorneys and apply classroom knowledge to real-life scenarios. While law school focuses on teaching students how to think like a lawyer, internships bridge the gap by offering hands-on experience with real clients, cases, and legal processes.

I chose to do my internship at BridgehouseLaw – Charlotte because I wanted exposure to a variety of legal areas. Entering law school with a strong interest in corporate law, I was also open to exploring other areas before making a final decision. BHL offers a unique opportunity to experience a broad spectrum of legal work, allowing me to develop a well-rounded understanding of different practice areas.

During my time at BridgehouseLaw, I had the chance to work on a wide range of tasks, including drafting legal documents, researching North Carolina and federal law, interacting with clients, and even attending court proceedings. The team is incredibly supportive and ensures that students gain experience in multiple legal disciplines.

Beyond the legal experience, interning at BHL also provided insights into the business operations of a law firm, helping me understand what to expect after graduation. One of the most unique aspects of my internship was the opportunity to work alongside international interns. I had the privilege of collaborating with two interns from Germany, which allowed me to gain a deeper appreciation for the differences between U.S. and German legal systems, as well as cultural perspectives. The international collaboration was a truly valuable experience that broadened my perspective and enriched my legal education.

My experience at BridgehouseLaw has been incredibly rewarding, and I highly encourage law students to seek out diverse internship opportunities to enhance their legal education and professional development.
